NEVER thought I’d live to see the day that acronym would be applicable to a toaster, but thanks to this 21st Century marvel, albeit along with a healthy lifestyle, I have done just that! This toaster is a nicely-styled brushed stainless steel 2-slice unit that replaces our 20-year-old 4-slice toaster. I knew it would be a hard-sell for my wife, since our prior toaster was designed with a retro 1950’s look that fit well into our original kitchen motif. Obviously this new toaster, with its normally black glossy control panel, did not fit that bill; but turns out the more modern look actually compliments the “evolved” look of our numerous newer appliances–air fryer, coffee grinder, etc. And at half the size of the old toaster it recoups a good bit of kitchen counter real-estate, which has already been occupied by an old-fashioned piggy cookie jar, proudly assuming the mantra of retro representative. Although her feelings about the gifts I present can be bafflingly inscrutable, my spouse did give signs of pleasure that may even have bordered on delight after her first use of this toaster. We followed the directions to “burn off” the element residue with a dry run at moderate heat, generating the expected odor. After that she toasted two sourdough slices to near perfection on her first try with nothing but delicious toast smell, with just a couple control panel finger touchs and a press of the toaster lever. The well-illuminated symbols flash after being touched making it very clear what features have been selected. It did take a couple tries in the final step due to unexpected extra pressure needed at the bottom position of the lever in order to latch it and initiate toasting. A countdown timer indicates exactly how long before the cycle is up and extra time can be added during the cycle should it be obvious it is needed. Touching the cancel symbol stops toasting and pops up the contents immediately. Neither has been required as yet though because the darkness symbols do a swell job of estimating the actual result with what’s being toasted. Overall the instruction manual included with the toaster does a good job of describing control symbol function and toaster operation–I actually recommend reading it. One of the first features I, personally, tested is the defrost selection. Turns out this is designed simply to add some time for the initial defrost of frozen bread, bagels, etc. Then it continues toasting to the level selected. Since we often freeze our hamburger and hotdog buns to avoid the heartbreak of mold, my objective is simply restoring as close to fresh, unfrozen buns as possible without overheating or toasting to any great degree. I discovered using the defrost mode along with the lightest toast setting produced exactly what I was looking for–a fresh warmed bun with virtually no signs of toasting. That, along with a little concurrent air fryer action on a couple frozen fillets, made for delicious fishwiches. The toaster consumes only 800 watts of energy and can therefore be operated at the same time as our 1KW air fryer, pulling exactly the same power as our microwave by itself. That power hog must be still be run mostly by itself since it trips the 20A kitchen breaker with anything more than the coffee maker in tandem. Speaking of power, there is a one-slice setting that I hoped would be cooler than it actually was. Before reading the instructions I was optimistic it might actually heat up only one side of the toaster, thereby reducing the toaster’s power use. Alas, that remains an energy saving feature not yet implemented but perhaps more suited to the politics of a later date in time. The instructions say the setting helps ensure best result for a single slice of toast so I guess I’ll still use it. One minor feature that pleases us in a major way is that the colorful many-iconed backlit control panel turns off after a few minutes of non-use, with the just the cancel symbol illuminated for easy startup. This allows the toaster to innocuously blend in with the other appliances. It may be high-tech, but doesn’t need to brag about it!
